MUSINGS OF MANNARKOIL PROFESSOR
Now And Then Here And There
This book is a collection of autobiographical anecdotes and memories of me- a village boy from Mannarkoil, in the state of Tamil Nadu India currently leading a retired life in Mississauga Canada. In this collection I have narrated in a humorous way certain experiences of mine presenting across different themes in various settings such as childhood and adulthood, Indian and Canadian etc. A number of readers may have similar experiences in their own life. This book will help readers ponder their own experiences; and when it gives them a chuckle, I will have achieved my goal.

“Reviewed By Asher Syed for Readers’ Favorite
Musings of Mannarkoil Professor by Gopalan Srinivasan documents his life experiences
through personal anecdotes. He discusses challenges South Indians face with Western
naming conventions, detailing frequent mispronunciations and confusions. He
recounts early writing rituals using traditional materials and transitions to pencils and
pens, describing their maintenance and social interactions related to their use.
Srinivasan recalls childhood barber visits, school rituals involving book reuse and
sweet celebrations, and college life marked by limited textbooks and dictated notes.
He describes his early career routines and contrasts postal services in India and
Canada, including the use of thumb impressions. Childhood memories include learning
to cycle, playing hockey barefoot, and local games. Post-retirement, he talks about
difficulties adapting to modern appliances. He also details his history with migraines,
consultations with specialists, and a humorous diagnosis termed “Mannarkoil
Syndrome.”
Musings of Mannarkoil Professor: Now and Then, Here and There by Gopalan
Srinivasan is a simple and straightforward memoir, written in a conversational and
approachable style that feels less like a manuscript and more like a chat with an older
relative. The best parts of Srinivasan’s work are when he shares memories of his
youth, and I chuckled as he described playing with immature coconuts fashioned into
rockets and the cautionary stories told by a college-educated landlord. It was also
quite funny when he describes the school milestone of when kids are first allowed to
use pens, particularly since he was not given a typical BIC that most readers would
identify with, and was instead given a fountain pen! These moments and others
provide a window into everyday experiences and cultural practices, and the book will
appeal to readers who enjoy simple slice-of-life vignettes. The real boon, though, will
be for Srinivasan’s family, who will no doubt treasure this piece of their own history for
generations to come.”

Good morning Prof Srinivasan
Let me introduce myself first. I am Yegneshwar, and am an ex-faculty of IIMA. I was at IIMA only for a brief period – 1990 to 1993. I decided to go to the industry after that. Prior to IIMA, I did my PhD in Computer Science & Engg from IIT Bombay. Before my PhD I worked for 2 years as a software engineer from 1982 to 1984. I left IIMA to join Infosys Technologies and was with them for 13 years. Post Infosys, I have been an independent consultant for the last 19 years.
I bought the Kindle version and found it really interesting for several reasons. One is that it is a very easy read. Secondly, it talks of simple experiences described in a humorous manner. And finally, my parents are from the same district (Tirunelveli) and I could connect well, though I did not live there but only visited for vacations.
My father is from Kallidaikkurichi and my mother is from Rangasamudram. Both are close to Ambasamudram. I grew up initially in Chennai and later in Bangalore. Currently I live in Bangalore. In my childhood days I went to Kallidaikkurichi for vacations. I had my uncle and aunt and cousins there. However, after 1975, I went back only once in 1992. And after 1992, never went back as all relatives have migrated.
All the chapters in your book are very well written and really entertaining. Your journey from Mannarkovil to Palayaamkotai to Chennai to Ahmedabad and then to Canada is like a fairy tale! It is evident from your book that providence played a great role in your journey, but as they say Providence favours the prepared mind and obviously, yours was a prepared mind!
I will write a review soon on Amazon – perhaps in the next few days.
Thank you. Best wishes.
